That muffled, blocked feeling in your ears is miserable and when it hits suddenly, waiting a week for an appointment isn't something you want to hear. At Nathan Gluck Hearing Care in Golders Green, we offer same day ear wax removal for exactly this reason.

Why Your Ears Block Up Without Warning

For most people, ear wax goes completely unnoticed for years. The ear cleans itself naturally, and it just... works. Then something changes. Maybe you've been using earbuds more often, had a cold recently, or the wax has simply built up to the point where it can no longer shift on its own. One morning you wake up and your hearing is noticeably muffled.

It feels alarming. It's actually very common.

The temptation is to reach for cotton buds or ear drops but this usually makes things worse. Cotton buds push wax deeper into the ear canal, where it becomes harder to remove and more likely to cause discomfort. The safest option is professional removal by a trained audiologist who can see what they're doing.

What Microsuction Actually Involves

Microsuction is the method we use for all ear wax removal at our clinic. A small, gentle suction device removes wax directly from the ear canal requiring no water, no flushing, and no mess. Your audiologist works with a microscope throughout, making it precise and safe. It's also the recommended option for patients who've had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, or bad experiences with irrigation in the past.

The whole appointment takes between 15 and 30 minutes. You'll complete a brief health form, your ears are examined and photographed before and after so you can see exactly what's been cleared, and then the procedure itself gets underway. Most patients describe it as straightforward with a gentle suction sound, a minute or two of actual treatment, and that's it. No preparation required. You don't need to use softening drops in advance, though we can apply a spray during the appointment if needed.

How We Handle Same Day Appointments

At our Golders Green clinic, we aim to offer same day appointments to anyone who contacts us before 5pm, subject to availability. We're open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 8pm, Fridays from 8am to 3pm, and Sundays from 8am to 8pm. Those extended hours mean there's often a slot available, including early morning and evening appointments that fit around work.

Can't get to the clinic? We carry out home visits for ear wax removal across N, NW, HA, EN and WD postcodes, using the same equipment we use in practice. If that's easier for you, just let us know when you call.

When Your Ears Need Prompt Attention

Most wax blockages aren't dangerous, but some situations do call for quicker action. If you've had a sudden drop in hearing, particularly after a flight, a swim, or a cold, wax is frequently the cause. A blocked ear that's also causing ringing, buzzing, dizziness, or pain deserves prompt attention rather than a wait-and-see approach.

You don't need to see a GP first or get a referral. You can contact us directly, and in most cases we can see you far sooner than an NHS appointment would allow.

What to Expect After Treatment

Your hearing should feel noticeably clearer almost immediately after the procedure. It can take a couple of hours for your ears to fully settle as they readjust, but most patients leave the clinic surprised at how different things sound.

Before you go, we'll talk through what we found and whether there's anything worth keeping an eye on. Some people are naturally more prone to wax build-up, and if that's you, we can suggest a simple routine to help prevent the problem from coming back.
