Private Hearing Care vs NHS Hearing Services
Private hearing care offers faster appointments, wider device choice, and more personalised follow-up compared to NHS audiology services, at an additional cost.

If conversations have started feeling harder to follow, you've probably already looked into your options. Two routes come up every time: a referral through your GP to NHS audiology, or booking directly with a private audiologist. Both can give you a proper hearing test and a hearing aid if you need one. What most people want to know is how the two experiences compare day to day, and which one fits their life.
How Long You'll Wait
NHS audiology waiting times vary across London. In many areas, an initial assessment can take several weeks, and if a hearing aid is recommended, a second fitting appointment adds further time on top.
At Nathan Gluck Hearing Care, you'll usually get an appointment within a week. At our Golders Green clinic, we also keep same-day slots for anyone who calls before 5pm and needs to be seen quickly, subject to availability. The clinic is open 8am to 8pm, Sunday to Thursday, and until 3pm on Fridays. If you work full time or are juggling the school run, you can still find a time that works for you. You don't need a referral from your GP to see us, just as you wouldn't for an optician or a dentist.
Which Hearing Aids Are Available
The NHS fits hearing aids well, and for many people that's the right route. NHS services usually fit from a more limited range of devices, which is a reasonable trade-off for a free service delivered across a large public health system.
As an independent practice, we fit hearing aids from Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, and Widex, and we keep up with the latest releases from each of them. That range matters because hearing needs differ from person to person. Someone who spends the day on calls and wants a device that streams audio straight to their phone has different priorities from someone who wants a simple, comfortable fit for everyday life. Being independent means we can recommend what suits you specifically, taking your hearing results, your lifestyle and your budget into account.
The Ongoing Support That Often Gets Overlooked
Getting a hearing aid fitted is only the start. Hearing changes over time, and so does how your device performs. Domes wear out, wax guards need replacing every four to six weeks, and the fit can shift. None of these are big jobs, but how quickly you can get them sorted makes a real difference to how much you actually wear your hearing aids.
NHS follow-up appointments are available, though waits vary depending on your local service. If something is bothering you, it helps to have it looked at quickly. That might be whistling feedback, a loose fit or background noise that's suddenly harder to manage.
When you call us during working hours, a member of our team answers the phone. We carry out minor repairs, adjustments, battery changes and wax filter replacements in the clinic, and we'll tell you straight away if a repair can't be done on the spot. Hearing aids bought from us come with a 30-day return policy, a warranty covering repairs, and regular follow-up appointments so we can adjust them as your hearing changes. We've been a family-run practice since 1997, and Nathan Gluck has been working as a hearing aid audiologist since 1994, so there is a good deal of experience behind every appointment.
Whether Going Private Is Worth It
Cost is a real factor, and it's worth being open about it. The NHS offers a free, clinically sound service, and plenty of people are well served by it. Private care differs in specific ways, and those differences matter more to some people than to others.
A hearing test at one of our clinics costs £90, and home visits start at £100. There's no obligation to buy a hearing aid afterwards. Hearing aid prices depend on the technology that suits you, and we'll talk you through the options at your consultation.
What private care gives you is speed, a wider choice of technology and a more personal level of attention. Some people use both: an NHS assessment first, followed by a visit to an independent practice for a second opinion or for ongoing aftercare. That is a perfectly reasonable approach. We clean and repair NHS hearing aids too, so you can come to us for aftercare whichever route you choose.
Our promise is to be open, honest and clear, and you'll never be under any pressure to take the advice we offer or the hearing device we recommend. If we think the NHS route makes more sense for your situation, we'll say so.
